Not creating the mp3...

Postby jrronimo » 05 May 2006, 06:35

Hopefully you'll see this! haha

I am using the lame.exe that comes in the pack here, from the 3.96 release, since there is no download available at the sourceforge site that I can ever find.

Having that and the rest of the files in the folder, I drag and drop a .flac. I see the .wav appear, briefly, and then it goes away and no mp3 is created.

Any tips?

Hi,

I will look into this (hopefully tomorrow), but I need some more info about the exact versions of all exes you are using.

I use Lame 3.96.1 and that runs OK with the transcoder on my system. That version is dated 2004-07-26! So it's pretty old, but it works fine. The version of the other exes I use are:
flac.exe 1.1.2 date: 2005-02-04
metaflac.exe 1.1.1 date: 2004-09-29

Is there no message at all? Are your flac files recently made - as far as you can tell?

Yeah, I think the flac files are pretty recent. However, using
Code: Select all
flac.exe -d [filename.flac]

decoded the files to .wav just fine.

FL2MP3 even made the .wavs -- I saw them before they disappeared. but no, there was no error message.

The lame.exe that I'm using (from the link in the previous message) is also 3.96.1, dated 2004-07-29. I use the command

Code: Select all
lame.exe --preset standard input .wav

to encode them.

The flac tools that I got are the most recent release online. Metaflac and flac are both version 1.1.2 dated 2005-02-03.

Thanks for looking into it! :)

I don't get it

Could you mail me a (short, not longer than 5 MB) copy of a flac that doesn't run with FL2MP3 on your system? I then can look to see if it runs here - or not.

Did you see a progress bar at all? Or only 1 progress bar and not the 2nd?

You are using XP, correct? If not: the front end was tested in XP and in W2k only, but I assume it runs on W98 and SE as well. There is nothing specifically related to XP as far as I remember.

I saw the first progress bar, but not the second. Flac.exe seemed to run fine. I think the problem is the lame.exe I used.

I don't have your e-mail, but the files are small. Here is a link: http://myst.no-ip.org/jrr/progs/fl2mp3/. The .zip or .rar (whichever you prefer) contain all 3 .exe's.

As a note, I ran this all on my desktop, which would be located in "c:\documents and settings\jrr\desktop\fl2mp3" -- perhaps something went weird with the location having spaces in it?

And yes, I'm using XP.

My email address is under the little envelope  : net@stols.com

Thanks for the exes. What I also would like (that is what I meant in the first place) is to have one of your *.flac that doesn't run. Not too large, but if you put it up on http://myst.no-ip.org/...etc... , all sizes are fine!

Your exes perform OK with one of my flac files, BTW.

No, I don't think the path with spaces in it matters. In a similar path on my desktop it is OK.

Only instance I know where FL2MP3 fails is when you use a read-only drive. The program by default tries to create *.wav and *.mp3 in the same directory, but if you specify a different destination in the context menu of FL2MP3, it also transcodes from e.g. CD or DVD.

By sheer chance I found a possible cause: the flac format accepts any user-defined genre, but mp3 only accepts a set of pre-defined genres.
If you try a flac with e.g "piano" as the genre data, mp3 conversion halts with an error.

I will put up a version giving an appropriate error message soon.

Version 0.6.9.18 behaves correctly with genre names that Lame does not accept: it removes the invalid genre name.
